Rock Island Bridge Event

The Urban Core of Kansas City has invited the members of Native Sons and Daughters of Greater Kansas City to the "Rock Island Bridge" event on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. The Rock Island Bridge is located behind the Hy-Vee Arena in the West Bottoms at 1799-1719 American Royal Drive, Kansas City, Missouri 64108.

The cost to cover food and drink is $10.00 for all members and $20 for non-members. Please RSVP to Linn Mills at 505-402-6630 or millsfrench27@gmail.com by Monday, June 17, 2024. Payment is due no later than June 20, 2024. (It is not too late to apply for membership at the low cost of $35 per year and receive the $10 event cost.)

For nearly a century, the Rock Island Railroad played a central role in the Kansas City Stockyards District, which ran along both sides of the Kansas (Kaw) River and was the second-largest beef processing center in the world. The Railroad's initial bridge over the Kansas River was swept away in the flood of 1901. The Railroad hired the American Bridge company to design and build two 302-foot-long Pennsylvania trusses and concrete foundations forty feet into the riverbed to replace it. The new bridge began service in 1905.
